What Can Dental Implants Do For Me?

Improving your quality of life with Dental Implants

Dental Implants can drastically improve your quality of life.

Having worked with Dental Implants for the past 15 years or so, I have treated many patients – each with a different need. This has taught me a so much about what is possible with dental implants and how they can change people’s lives.

Dental implants have come a long way since the first one was placed by Dr Branemark in 1965. Today, they are much more predictable, less invasive and the end results are much more aesthetically pleasing than they were even 5 years ago.

What can dental implants do for me

In my experience these are some of the ways in which dental implants have changed the lives of my patients and can change your life too.

1. Dental implants allow you to chew your food effectively

This is so important because so much of your digestion occurs when you chew your food.
Scientists say that up to 30% of digestion occurs in the mouth.

But it is the mechanical breakdown of the food which is important. This mechanical breakdown aides the digestion of the food within the stomach and makes it possible for your stomach acid to break down and absorb the nutrients you need. If your teeth are not biting properly due to lack of teeth (occlusion) then your digestion will not be ideal which could be detrimental to your overall health. This would cause poor absorption of nutrients which could lead to all sorts of health issues

Patients often say to me they suffer with persistent acid reflux or indigestion. They have a lowered immunity and are constantly getting ill or they constantly feel drained of energy or are constantly tired. All these symptoms could be the result of poor absorption of nutrients within the digestive system due to lack of inadequate chewing of food.
Having Dental Implants would eradicate this problem.

2. Dental Implants can make you look younger

If you have missing teeth you often have sunken-in cheeks and muscles around the teeth. This often causes wrinkles and that sunken-in appearance around the jaw.
If your lip is not supported by the teeth it often looks as if you have no teeth or that you are wearing dentures.
If your lips are supported and in the correct position it looks healthy and keeps you looking younger. Dental Implants can certainly help in this regard.

3. Dental Implants can give you an attractive smile

When you have Dental Implants you have support structures for teeth which can be fixed in the idle positions in your jaw. This is often very helpful in cases where existing teeth were badly decayed or in poor positions.
These days the technology involved in Dental Implants production is so advanced and the materials used are so much better than years ago. This means that the final results look so natural and so aesthetically appealing that you generally can’t tell the difference between your teeth and the dental implants.
The porcelain crowns we use these days are very different to what was used years ago – especially because we can now use metal-free attachments and crowns. This allows us to achieve a natural, aesthetic result.
Together with computerised Digital Smile Design we can get as close to nature as possible.

4. Dental Implants can aid in correcting jaw ache and other symptoms

The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint which controls your jaw movements. This joint is very important because of its position.
The TMJ has a very high blood supply and is very close to many of the main nerves of the neck, head and face. It has been shown through many studies that the TMJ can be a cause of many negative side effects like migraines, neuralgia, bruxism (teeth grinding), sinusitis, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo (dizzyness), earache, and many more if the joint is not working properly.
By replacing what was lost, dental implants can restore the TMJ to its most natural position which in turn could relieve these symptoms.

5. Dental implants help you to speak better

By having the correct amount of teeth in the right positions, you are able to pronounce your words effectively. This is because of the fact that you are able to allow the airflow from your larynx (voicebox) to flow in the correct way out through the lips.
By having the correct amount of properly spaced teeth you are able to do this effectively. It is also very important for those who play any sort of wind instrument because of this airflow.
This would also stop you from lisping the way you may do if you have dentures.

6. Dental implants help you to taste and enjoy your food

We often replace full coverage plastic dentures with dental implants on many of our patients. This radically changes what they can taste as it removes the coverage of the denture over their taste buds. This effectively kills the taste buds. Once the denture is replaced and the taste buds are exposed they will also multiply.
This allows our patients to enjoy their food all the more, besides being able to chew so much more effectively.
