What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental Veneers are ultra-thin shells of ceramic (porcelain) bonded to the front of your teeth. They are a minimally invasive method of improving the appearance of your teeth. Using these porcelain shells you can mask the colour, shape, length, and even to an extent the position of the teeth you are unhappy with. Your perfect smile can be created with dental veneers – whether you have gaps, overcrowded, deep stained or misshapen teeth dental veneers can be an excellent and conservative way of correcting your smile.

“…Having Dental Veneers done at Silver Oaks Dental Clinic has completely changed my life – it has totally lifted my self confidence and self esteem…”

Benefits of Dental Veneers

  • Cost Effective

Dental Veneers can be very cost effective as they don’t require months of adjustment appointments.

  • Conservative Treatment

Using Digital Smile Design and 3-D printing technology we are able to place veneers on patients sometimes without even using a drill. We normally only take the absolute minimum amount of tooth structure away.

  • Shorter Time Frame

The veneer process takes just 2-3 visits and can be completed in about 2 weeks or less.

  • Change the Shape & Colour of your Teeth

Dental Veneers can physically change the shape and colour of your teeth. Very often we have found that you will require dental veneers after orthodontic treatment.

  • Close Gaps Between Teeth

Dental Veneers can close gaps between teeth and mask any dark areas and shadows you may show when you smile. They can also mask crowding of teeth.

  • Relieve Sensitivity

Because they cover the full-frontal surface of the tooth dental veneers often help to relieve sensitivity. Many of our patients tell us that since having dental veneers their teeth are no longer sensitive to cold.

“Dr Huson, and his team have been the absolute best! Everyone was so helpful, comforting and friendly. I absolutely love my veneers! Thank you for everything.”

Your Dental Veneer Journey

Click on the tabs below to explore the journey to your smile transformation with dental veneers –

Appointment 1 – Initial consult

At your first appointment we would discuss what bothers you about your teeth. It is very important that we identify what your needs and desires are so that we can do our best to meet them accordingly. We would then do a provisional digital design of what your smile could look like using digital photographs and a special software app which shows you what can be done with dental veneers and cosmetic dentistry.

If you agree with the basic design we would then give you a provisional quotation and arrange to have a Digital Smile Design done. This involves taking photographs, videos as well as a 3-D scanning of your teeth and face. You can learn more about the Digital Smile Design process here.

Appointment 2 – Smile Test Drive

The Digital Smile Design is converted into a 3-D model which is printed with our 3-D printer. This model is used to create the template for what is called the “mock-up.” This is where you get to “test drive” your new smile. You are now able to see what your new teeth could look like in your mouth – you can talk, laugh and see your “future-self” in the mirror.

Appointment 3 – Veneer preparation

Using a rubber stent we fill it with a special resin and place it over your teeth. We would have given you some local anaesthetic to numb the teeth. We then cut through the new template so as to keep the amount of tooth preparation to the absolute minimum. We therefore try to be as conservative as possible and always try to mimic nature in everything we do. The teeth preparations are then polished clean and are then scanned with a 3D dental scanner. The same rubber stent is then used again to create temporary veneers which you will wear for about a week while the final veneers are made by our on-site laboratory. This gives you an opportunity to try out your new teeth before the final fit.

Appointment 4 – Try in & Cementation

After about a week the temporary veneers are removed and the underlying teeth are cleaned thoroughly. You would have been given some local anaesthetic so the teeth would be numb at this stage.

The new veneers are tried in and held in place with a temporary cement. You are shown your new veneers in the mirror. At this stage small changes can still be made and you will discuss these with your dentist as well as our on-site dental laboratory technician. Once you’re happy with the look of your veneers they will be permanently cemented onto your existing teeth.

A final look in the mirror reveals a new person who can now smile, talk, laugh and post selfies on Instagram with complete confidence.

Are you ready to get the beautiful smile you’ve been dreaming about?

How long do Dental Veneers Last?

Dental veneers (especially porcelain ones) are very strong. Studies show a 95% success rate of porcelain dental veneers over a 15 year period if they are correctly made with digital templates and cemented onto minimally prepared enamel only. These techniques are part of our standard protocol at Silver Oaks Dental Clinic.

Different types of Dental Veneers

There are 2 types of Dental Veneers –

Porcelain Veneers and Composite (Resin Bonded) Veneers.

Porcelain veneers (also known as indirect veneers) are made in the lab before they are cemented in the mouth. Resin bonded veneers (also known as direct veneers) are directly bonded onto the teeth using rubber templates which are designed and 3-D printed in the lab.

Porcelain veneers are more expensive but have a longer lifespan. They do not pick up any stains and are more colour stable. Resin bonded veneers are cheaper however do not last as long as porcelain veneers and are prone to staining.

Who else has Dental Veneers?

In recent years Dental Veneers have become very popular with celebrities like Cheryl Cole, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tom Cruise and Nicholas Cage (to name but a few) all opting for the ease and great results achieved by veneers. We at Silver Oaks Dental Clinic have placed more than 6500 dental veneers all with excellent results.

“So happy with the veneers. Can’t wait to flash them in my shoot! Thank you for the best results.”
