How Clear Aligners Work for Adult Patients

Understanding how clear aligners work for adult patients is crucial for making an informed decision about orthodontic treatment. At Silver Oaks Dental Clinic, we believe that educated patients achieve the best outcomes, which is why we’re committed to explaining the science behind clear aligner technology and how it’s specifically adapted for adult needs.

Clear aligners represent one of the most significant advances in orthodontic care, combining cutting-edge materials science with sophisticated treatment planning software to deliver predictable, comfortable results. Unlike traditional braces that rely on brackets and wires, clear aligner treatment uses a series of custom-made, transparent trays that gradually guide teeth into their optimal positions.

The Science Behind Clear Aligner Therapy for Adults

Understanding the Biological Foundation

The effectiveness of clear aligners relies on the same fundamental biological principles that govern all orthodontic movement, regardless of age. We help our patients understand that teeth are not rigidly fixed in the jawbone, but rather are held in place by a complex system of fibres and supported by bone that can adapt and remodel throughout life.

When clear aligners apply gentle, controlled pressure to teeth, they trigger a remarkable biological response called bone remodelling. This process involves the breakdown of bone tissue on one side of the tooth (where pressure is applied) and the formation of new bone tissue on the opposite side (where the tooth is moving towards). This cellular activity is what allows teeth to move gradually into new positions during clear aligner treatment.

The Journal of International Orthodontic Orthognathic Surgery (2022) confirms that whilst this bone remodelling process may occur at a slightly slower rate in adults compared to adolescents, it remains highly effective throughout life.

What’s particularly fascinating about clear aligners is how the technology has been refined to work optimally with adult physiology. The forces applied by clear aligners are carefully calibrated to stimulate bone remodelling without causing damage or excessive discomfort, making the treatment both effective and comfortable for adult patients.

Advanced Materials and Manufacturing

Modern clear aligners are manufactured using sophisticated thermoplastic materials that represent the cutting edge of dental technology. According to the comprehensive review published in Frontiers in Materials (2022), most clear aligners are made from thermoplastic polyurethane materials, specifically chosen for their unique combination of properties.

At Silver Oaks Dental Clinic, we work with clear aligner systems that utilise materials engineered for optimal performance in the mouth. These materials must be transparent enough to remain virtually invisible, flexible enough to be comfortable during extended wear, yet strong enough to apply the precise forces needed for tooth movement. The biocompatibility of these materials is crucial, as adults typically wear aligners for 20-22 hours per day over many months.

The manufacturing process itself is a marvel of modern technology. Each set of clear aligners for adults is custom-manufactured using 3D printing technology based on precise digital models of the patient’s teeth. This level of customisation ensures that every aligner fits perfectly and applies forces exactly where needed to achieve the planned tooth movements.

The precision of modern manufacturing means that clear aligners for adults can achieve remarkably predictable results. We use advanced digital treatment planning that allows us to show patients their expected results before treatment even begins, providing confidence and peace of mind about their investment.

Digital Treatment Planning Revolution

Perhaps the most significant advancement in clear aligner technology has been the development of sophisticated digital treatment planning systems where we use cutting-edge software that creates detailed 3D models of patients’ teeth and simulates the entire treatment process from start to finish.

This digital approach begins with precise scanning of the patient’s teeth, either through digital impressions or traditional moulds that are digitised. The resulting 3D model captures every detail of the patient’s dental anatomy, providing the foundation for creating a customised treatment plan.

The software then calculates the optimal path for moving each tooth from its current position to the desired final position. This process takes into account the unique characteristics of adult dentition, including any previous dental work, bone density considerations, and the patient’s specific treatment goals. The result is a series of incremental movements, each represented by a different set of aligners.

What makes this particularly valuable is the ability to visualise the entire treatment process before it begins. Patients can see exactly how their smile will transform over the course of treatment, helping them understand the value of their investment and maintain motivation throughout the process.

How Clear Aligners Address Adult-Specific Orthodontic Challenges

Accommodating Previous Dental Work

One of the unique challenges in providing clear aligners for adults is accommodating previous dental work such as crowns, bridges, fillings, and implants. Our experienced team is skilled at developing treatment plans that work harmoniously with existing dental restorations.

Clear aligner treatment can be successfully completed even when patients have significant previous dental work, though it may require modified approaches. For example, teeth with crowns can still be moved orthodontically, but the treatment planning must account for the different properties of the crown material compared to natural tooth enamel.

Dental implants present a particular consideration, as they cannot be moved orthodontically. However, clear aligners for adults can be designed to move the surrounding natural teeth into better positions relative to the implants, often improving both function and aesthetics.

The key to successful clear aligner treatment with previous dental work is thorough planning and realistic expectations. During the consultation process, we carefully evaluate all existing dental work and explain how it will influence the treatment plan and expected outcomes.

Managing Periodontal Health During Treatment

Adult patients often have concerns about gum health during orthodontic treatment, and rightfully so. Periodontal health becomes increasingly important with age, and any orthodontic treatment must be carefully managed to protect and preserve gum health which is why we place particular emphasis on maintaining excellent periodontal health throughout clear aligner treatment.

One of the significant advantages of clear aligners is their removability, which allows for superior oral hygiene compared to traditional braces. Patients can remove their aligners for thorough brushing and flossing, making it easier to maintain the high level of oral hygiene that adult patients require.

The MDPI study (2023) highlights how proper tooth alignment achieved through clear aligner treatment can actually improve gingival health by eliminating areas where plaque and bacteria typically accumulate. This is particularly beneficial for adult patients who may already be at increased risk for periodontal disease.

Throughout treatment at Silver Oaks, we monitor periodontal health closely and provide guidance on optimal oral hygiene techniques for patients wearing clear aligners. This proactive approach helps ensure that patients not only achieve straighter teeth but also maintain or even improve their gum health during treatment.

Addressing Bone Density Considerations

As we age, changes in bone density can affect how teeth respond to orthodontic forces. Our treatment planning takes these physiological changes into account, ensuring that treatment remains safe and effective regardless of the patient’s age.

While bone density changes can affect the rate of tooth movement, they don’t prevent successful treatment. Instead, our experienced team adjusts treatment protocols to work optimally with each patient’s individual physiology. This might involve slightly longer wear times for each set of aligners or modifications to the force levels applied.

The gentle, controlled forces applied by clear aligners are particularly well-suited to adult patients, as they stimulate bone remodelling without placing excessive stress on the supporting structures. This makes clear aligner treatment not only effective but also comfortable for adult patients.

Regular monitoring throughout treatment allows us to assess how each patient is responding to treatment and make any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal outcomes. This personalised approach is one of the key factors that makes clear aligner treatment so successful at Silver Oaks.

Advantages of Clear Aligners Specifically for Adult Patients

Professional and Social Discretion

Perhaps the most compelling advantage of clear aligners is their virtually invisible appearance. We understand that adult patients have professional and social obligations that make discretion a priority. Clear aligners address this concern beautifully, allowing patients to undergo orthodontic treatment without drawing unwanted attention.

The transparent nature of clear aligners means that most people won’t even notice that you’re wearing them. This is particularly important for professionals who attend client meetings, give presentations, or work in customer-facing roles. The confidence that comes from knowing your orthodontic treatment is virtually invisible allows you to focus on your professional responsibilities without self-consciousness.

Social situations also become more comfortable with clear aligners for adults. Whether you’re attending social gatherings, dating, or participating in family events, the discrete nature of clear aligners means you can smile, speak, and laugh naturally without feeling self-conscious about your orthodontic treatment.

Many of our patients report that colleagues and friends don’t even realise they’re undergoing orthodontic treatment until they mention it. This level of discretion is simply not possible with traditional metal braces, making clear aligners the preferred choice for image-conscious adults.

Lifestyle Flexibility and Convenience

Clear aligners also offer unprecedented flexibility compared to traditional orthodontic treatments. The removability of clear aligners means that patients can adapt their treatment to their lifestyle rather than dramatically changing their routine to accommodate orthodontic appliances.

We emphasise that while clear aligners should be worn 20-22 hours per day for optimal results, they can be removed for eating, drinking, and special occasions. This flexibility is particularly valuable for adults who attend business dinners, social events, or have professional obligations that might be complicated by fixed orthodontic appliances.

The ability to remove clear aligners for eating means there are no dietary restrictions during treatment. Adults can continue to enjoy all their favourite foods, from crunchy vegetables to sticky treats, without worrying about damaging orthodontic appliances or getting food trapped in braces.

Special occasions also become more manageable with clear aligners. While we recommend keeping aligner removal to a minimum, patients can temporarily remove their aligners for important events like weddings, job interviews, or professional presentations if absolutely necessary.

Enhanced Oral Hygiene Capabilities

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene becomes increasingly important with age, and clear aligners actually make it easier to maintain optimal dental health during orthodontic treatment.

The removability of clear aligners allows for thorough brushing and flossing using normal techniques. This is a significant advantage over traditional braces, which can make cleaning difficult and may increase the risk of decay and gum problems. Adult patients, who often have more complex dental histories, particularly benefit from this improved cleanability.

Many patients find that the routine of removing aligners for cleaning encourages more frequent and thorough oral hygiene. The need to clean both teeth and aligners often results in patients paying more attention to their oral health than they did before treatment.

The improved alignment achieved through clear aligner treatment also makes long-term oral hygiene easier. Straighter teeth are naturally easier to clean, reducing the risk of future dental problems and making it easier to maintain the investment in orthodontic treatment.

Treatment Duration and Expectations for Adults

Realistic Timelines for Adult Clear Aligner Treatment

One of the most common questions we receive  concerns treatment duration. While every case is unique, understanding typical timelines helps patients set realistic expectations and plan for their orthodontic journey.

According to the review in Preprints.org (2025), treatment duration for clear aligners in adults typically ranges from 12 to 24 months, depending on case complexity. This timeframe is remarkably similar to treatment times for adolescents, though individual factors can influence the specific duration for each patient.

At Silver Oaks, we’ve found that simpler cases involving mild crowding or spacing often resolve in 12-18 months, while more complex cases requiring significant tooth movement may take 18-24 months or occasionally longer. The key factors that influence treatment duration include the severity of the initial malocclusion, the complexity of the movements required, and patient compliance with wearing instructions.

It’s important to understand that whilst adult bone remodelling may occur at a slightly slower rate than in adolescents, this difference is often not clinically significant. Many of our adult patients complete their treatment within the same timeframes as younger patients, particularly when they maintain excellent compliance with wearing instructions.

Factors That Influence Treatment Success

Patient compliance plays the most crucial role in determining both the success and duration of clear aligner treatment for adults. The 20-22 hours per day recommendation is essential for achieving optimal results within the predicted timeframe.

The advantage of treating adults is that they typically demonstrate excellent compliance with treatment instructions. Adult patients understand the investment they’re making and are generally highly motivated to follow recommendations. This often results in more predictable treatment outcomes compared to adolescent patients.

Individual biological response also influences treatment progression. Some patients respond more quickly to orthodontic forces, while others may require additional time for optimal tooth movement. Our experienced team monitors each patient’s progress closely and adjusts treatment plans as needed to ensure the best possible outcomes.

The complexity of the initial orthodontic problem naturally affects treatment duration. Simple spacing or crowding issues often resolve relatively quickly, while cases involving significant bite corrections or rotational movements may require extended treatment times. During the initial consultation, we provide realistic estimates based on the specific characteristics of each case.

Managing Expectations Throughout Treatment

We believe that well-informed patients have the most positive treatment experiences. We take time to explain not only the expected final outcome but also what patients can expect during the various phases of clear aligner treatment.

The initial adjustment period typically lasts a few days to a week as patients become accustomed to wearing clear aligners. Some mild discomfort or pressure is normal during this period and when transitioning to new aligners, but this usually subsides quickly and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers if needed.

Progress during clear aligner treatment for adults is typically gradual and steady. While dramatic changes aren’t usually visible week-to-week, patients often notice significant improvements after 2-3 months of treatment. We schedule regular check-ups to monitor progress and provide encouragement throughout the treatment journey.

It’s important for adult patients to understand that orthodontic treatment is a process that requires patience and commitment. However, the investment of time yields long-lasting benefits that extend far beyond the treatment period, making it a worthwhile commitment for patients of any age.

Common Concerns About Clear Aligners for Adults

Speech and Comfort Considerations

Many prospective patients worry about how clear aligners will affect their speech, particularly given the professional communication requirements that many adults face. These concerns are thoroughly addressed during consultation and we provide guidance to help patients adapt quickly to their new aligners.

Most patients experience only minor speech changes when they first begin wearing clear aligners, typically a slight lisp that resolves within a few days as the tongue adapts to the presence of the aligners. The thin profile of modern clear aligners minimises speech interference, and most patients find that colleagues and friends don’t notice any changes in their speech.

For professionals who rely heavily on verbal communication, we recommend starting clear aligner treatment at a time when they can allow for a brief adjustment period. However, most patients find that any initial speech changes are so minimal that they don’t interfere with professional activities.

Comfort is another common concern, and we’re pleased to report that clear aligners for adults are generally very comfortable to wear. The smooth plastic material doesn’t irritate the cheeks and lips like traditional metal braces can, and the custom fit ensures that aligners feel secure and comfortable during extended wear.

Effectiveness Compared to Traditional Braces

Adult patients often wonder whether clear aligners are as effective as traditional braces for their specific orthodontic needs. The truth is that clear aligner technology has advanced dramatically and can now address most orthodontic issues that adults commonly face.

The MDPI study (2023) demonstrates that clear aligners are particularly effective for mild to moderate crowding, spacing issues, and many bite problems. In fact, we’ve successfully treated a wide range of orthodontic conditions using clear aligners, often achieving results that exceed patients’ expectations.

Certain complex cases may still require traditional braces or hybrid approaches, but the vast majority of adult orthodontic needs can be addressed effectively with clear aligners. During the consultation process, we thoroughly evaluate each case and recommend the most appropriate treatment modality for optimal results.

The predictability of clear aligner treatment, enabled by advanced digital planning, often allows for more precise control over tooth movement than traditional braces. This precision is particularly valuable for adult patients who want to understand exactly what their investment will achieve.

The Science-Backed Choice for Adult Orthodontics

Understanding how clear aligners work reveals why this technology has become the preferred choice for so many adults seeking orthodontic treatment. The combination of advanced materials science, sophisticated treatment planning, and design features specifically suited to adult needs makes clear aligners an optimal solution for adult orthodontics.

Clear Aligners for Adults: Are You Too Old to Straighten Your Teeth?

Clear aligners for adults have revolutionised orthodontic treatment, and the question “Am I too old to straighten my teeth?” is one we hear regularly at Silver Oaks Dental Clinic. The simple answer is no—you’re never too old to improve your smile with clear aligners for adults. In fact, the adult clear aligner market has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, with individuals well into their 40s, 50s and beyond choosing this modern orthodontic solution.

Why Clear Aligners for Adults Are Gaining Popularity

Breaking the Age Barrier in Adult Orthodontics

The perception that orthodontic treatment belongs exclusively in adolescence has been thoroughly debunked in recent years. According to market research from Grand View Research (2024), the clear aligner market has experienced substantial growth, with adult patients representing a significant portion of this expansion. This trend reflects a broader societal shift towards prioritising dental health and aesthetics at any age, which we’ve observed firsthand in our South African patient demographic looking for clear aligners for adults.

What’s particularly encouraging is how this cultural transformation has been embraced by dental professionals who understand the unique needs of adult patients. At Silver Oaks Dental Clinic, we’ve witnessed this shift in our own practice, where adults now represent the majority of our clear aligner patients. The stigma once associated with adult orthodontics has diminished considerably, replaced by a recognition that investing in clear aligners for adults is a worthwhile endeavour regardless of age.

This shift has been facilitated by the development of more aesthetically pleasing treatment options that address many of the concerns that previously deterred adults from seeking orthodontic care. Unlike the conspicuous metal braces of the past, modern clear aligners for adults offer an almost invisible solution that fits seamlessly into professional and social environments.

The South African Adult Orthodontics Revolution

In South Africa, we’re experiencing a particularly notable surge in adults seeking clear aligner treatment. Many of our patients find themselves motivated by aesthetic concerns, having become more image-conscious in an era of social media and video conferencing. This heightened awareness often prompts them to address long-standing insecurities about their smiles that they may have lived with for decades.

Beyond aesthetics, practical considerations play a significant role in adult decision-making regarding clear aligner treatment. Financial independence allows many adults to invest in orthodontic solutions that they or their parents couldn’t afford during childhood. At Silver Oaks, we’ve structured our clear aligner packages to accommodate this adult demographic, offering flexible payment plans that make treatment accessible to working professionals.

There’s also a growing recognition amongst health-conscious South Africans that straight teeth contribute not just to appearance but to overall oral health, making clear aligners for adults a practical health investment. This holistic approach to dental wellness resonates strongly with our patients at Silver Oaks, who appreciate treatments that deliver both aesthetic and health benefits.

Professional and Personal Benefits Driving Adult Choices

The convergence of these factors has created an ideal environment for clear aligners for adults to flourish in South Africa. In fact, we’ve observed that our adult patients are particularly drawn to the professional advantages that come with an improved smile. In competitive business environments, confidence in one’s appearance can have tangible impacts on career progression and professional relationships.

Many of our patients report that their decision to pursue clear aligners for adults was influenced by career considerations. Whether it’s preparing for important presentations, client meetings, or leadership roles, having confidence in their smile allows them to focus on their professional performance rather than feeling self-conscious about their appearance.

The personal benefits are equally compelling. Adults who have lived with dental insecurities for years often describe the decision to pursue clear aligner treatment as liberating. At Silver Oaks, we’ve witnessed remarkable transformations not just in our patients’ smiles, but in their overall confidence and quality of life.

Benefits of Clear Aligners for Adults Beyond Aesthetics

Oral Health Improvements with Adult Clear Aligner Treatment

Whilst many adults initially seek clear aligner treatment for cosmetic reasons, the health benefits often prove equally valuable and sometimes even more significant in the long term. We often emphasise to our patients that clear aligners contribute to better oral health in several important ways that become increasingly relevant as we age.

Properly aligned teeth achieved through clear aligner treatment are considerably easier to clean, with fewer overlapping surfaces and tight spaces that trap plaque and debris. This improvement in cleanability reduces the risk of decay and gum disease—conditions that become increasingly common and problematic with age. For adults who have struggled with thorough oral hygiene due to crooked or crowded teeth, this benefit alone can justify the investment in clear aligners for adults.

The MDPI study (2023) confirms what we observe in our practice at Silver Oaks: properly aligned teeth achieved through clear aligners can significantly improve gingival health by eliminating problematic areas where bacteria accumulate. This is particularly important for adults who may already be at increased risk of gum disease due to age-related factors.

Beyond cleaning advantages, correct alignment through adult clear aligner treatment helps reduce abnormal wear and tear on teeth. Malocclusion can cause uneven wear patterns, potentially leading to enamel erosion, sensitivity and even tooth fractures over time. By correcting bite issues, clear aligner treatment helps distribute biting forces more evenly across the dental arch, preserving natural tooth structure for years to come.

Long-Term Health Investment Value

We help our patients understand that clear aligners represent a long-term investment in their oral health. The improved alignment achieved through treatment can prevent costly dental problems down the road. When teeth are properly positioned, they’re less susceptible to decay, gum disease, and excessive wear—all conditions that can require expensive treatments later in life.

The bite improvements that often accompany clear aligner treatment can also alleviate stress on the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). Some adults experience TMJ discomfort related to malocclusion, and whilst orthodontic treatment isn’t primarily prescribed for TMJ disorders, many patients report relief from symptoms after completing their clear aligner therapy.

For adults concerned about healthcare costs, the preventive aspect of clear aligners for adults makes particular sense. By investing in proper alignment now, patients may avoid more complex and costly dental procedures in the future. This forward-thinking approach to dental health resonates with many of our patients who appreciate treatments that provide both immediate and long-term value.

Psychological and Social Benefits of Clear Aligners for Adults

The transformative power of an improved smile extends well beyond physical health, often delivering profound psychological and social benefits that adult patients describe as life-changing. We’ve witnessed remarkable transformations in our patients’ confidence and quality of life following clear aligner treatment.

Research consistently shows that clear aligners can have remarkable effects on self-esteem and confidence, influencing everything from personal relationships to professional opportunities. Many of our patients report experiencing significant liberation from years of self-consciousness about their smile after completing clear aligner treatment.

Those who have spent decades feeling embarrassed about their teeth often describe the freedom to smile, speak and laugh without restraint as one of the most meaningful outcomes of their clear aligners for adults journey. At Silver Oaks, we’ve observed that the psychological benefits of clear aligner treatment often exceed our patients’ initial expectations. The decision to invest in clear aligners for adults frequently represents a broader commitment to self-care and personal improvement that positively impacts multiple areas of life.

Social and Professional Confidence Boost

The social benefits of clear aligners for adults are particularly relevant in today’s diverse cultural and professional landscape. Confidence in one’s smile can enhance communication across cultural and linguistic barriers, making social and professional interactions more comfortable and effective.

Many of our patients report that their improved smile has positively affected their dating life, social relationships, and professional networking. The ability to smile freely without self-consciousness opens doors to connections that may have been hindered by dental insecurities.

In professional contexts, the confidence that comes from clear aligner treatment can be particularly valuable. Whether presenting to clients, leading meetings, or interviewing for new positions, having confidence in one’s smile allows professionals to focus on their message rather than worrying about their appearance.

The psychological well-being that comes from addressing a long-standing source of insecurity through clear aligner treatment provides a sense of empowerment and control that positively impacts overall mental health. For many adult patients, this represents one of the most valuable aspects of their treatment experience.

Why Age Should Never Be a Barrier

Biological Realities vs. Myths About Adult Orthodontics

One of the most persistent myths about clear aligners for adults is that teeth become “fixed” and unmovable with age. We regularly address this misconception with patients who are surprised to learn that orthodontic tooth movement remains possible throughout life.

The Journal of International Orthodontic Orthognathic Surgery (2022) confirms what we demonstrate daily in our practice: whilst the bone remodelling process may be slightly slower in adults compared to adolescents, this doesn’t prevent successful outcomes with clear aligners for adults. The fundamental biological mechanism of tooth movement—pressure-induced bone resorption and deposition—remains effective throughout life.

We’ve successfully treated patients in their 50s and 60s with clear aligners, proving that age alone is never a disqualifying factor. The key is understanding that treatment may require slightly longer timelines and more careful monitoring, which our experienced team is well-equipped to provide.

Adult patients should be aware of additional considerations that may influence their clear aligner treatment journey. Age-related changes in bone density can affect the rate of tooth movement, whilst previous dental work such as crowns or bridges may require modified treatment approaches. Adults with a history of gum disease require particularly careful monitoring during clear aligner treatment to ensure ongoing periodontal health.

Why Orthodontic Treatment for Adults?

Adult orthodontic treatment addresses a variety of dental issues that can impact overall oral health and self-confidence. Here are some reasons why adults may seek orthodontic care:

  • Misaligned teeth: Crooked or crowded teeth can lead to difficulties in cleaning, increasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Bite problems: Issues like overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite can cause discomfort and affect chewing and speaking.
  • Jaw pain: Misalignment can lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, causing chronic jaw pain and headaches.
  • Aesthetic concerns: A straight, well-aligned smile enhances appearance and boosts self-esteem.

Clear Aligners: A Modern Solution for Adults

Clear aligners have revolutionised orthodontic treatment for adults, offering a discreet and comfortable alternative to traditional braces. At Silver Oaks Dental Clinic, we are proud to offer this innovative solution to our patients.

Benefits of Clear Aligners

  • Invisibility: Clear aligners are virtually invisible, making them an ideal choice for adults concerned about the appearance of braces.
  • Comfort: Made from smooth, BPA-free plastic, clear aligners are comfortable to wear and less likely to irritate gums and cheeks.
  • Removability: Aligners can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing, promoting better oral hygiene and allowing more dietary freedom.
  • Customisation: Each set of aligners is custom-made to fit your teeth perfectly, ensuring effective and precise alignment.

How Clear Aligners Work

Clear aligners gradually move teeth into their desired positions using a series of custom-made, removable trays. Here’s how the process works:

  1. Digital smile design: We begin with a comprehensive digital smile design process, allowing you to see a preview of your new smile before treatment commences.
  2. 3D printed models: Once you approve the digital design, our onsite lab digitally creates 3D printed models that serve as precise templates for crafting your clear aligner trays.
  3. Aligner treatment: You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, gradually moving your teeth until they reach the desired alignment.
  4. Retention phase: After treatment, we provide either a custom clear retainer or wire retainer to maintain your new smile’s alignment based on your lifestyle and dental needs.

Treatment Duration and Retention

Treatment duration varies depending on the complexity of your case, typically ranging from 6 to 18 months. Following treatment, our retention options ensure your teeth remain optimally positioned:

  • Clear retainers: Worn nightly, these removable retainers maintain your teeth alignment discreetly.
  • Wire retainers: Fixed in place, wire retainers provide continuous support and are ideal for long-term retention.

The Advantage of Our Onsite Lab

One of the unique benefits of choosing Silver Oaks Dental Clinic is our state-of-the-art onsite lab. This facility allows us to expedite the production of your custom aligners and other orthodontic appliances, reducing waiting times and accelerating your treatment process.

Faster Treatment Times

  • Quick turnaround: With our onsite lab, we can create and adjust aligners more quickly than clinics that outsource this work, meaning you get started on your treatment sooner.
  • Immediate adjustments: Any necessary adjustments to your aligners can be made on the spot, minimising delays and ensuring continuous progress.

Traditional Braces for Complex Cases

While we specialise in clear aligners, it’s important to acknowledge that traditional braces are another effective option for complex alignment issues. Braces can be highly effective for severe misalignments and bite issues, but they come with their own set of challenges such as visibility and comfort.

Advantages of Clear Aligners Over Traditional Braces

  • Discreet appearance: Clear aligners are nearly invisible, while traditional braces are more noticeable.
  • Enhanced comfort: Aligners are generally more comfortable than braces, which can cause irritation and require periodic tightening.
  • Improved oral hygiene: Aligners can be removed for cleaning, whereas braces require careful brushing and flossing around brackets and wires.
  • Flexible treatment: The ability to remove aligners for special occasions or important meetings adds convenience to daily life.

Conclusion

Orthodontic treatment for adults offer effective solutions for correcting complex alignment issues, improving both oral health and aesthetics. At Silver Oaks Dental Clinic, we provide advanced options like clear aligners, supported by our efficient onsite lab to ensure faster, more convenient treatment. – Cons

  • Not all cases are suitable. It cannot correct major overbites/underbites and excessive crowding.
  • It needs to be worn for at least 22 hours a day.
  • Having the freedom to remove it may lead you to not wearing it as often as you should.

Both Traditional Braces and Aligners are effective treatments when it comes to realigning your teeth. A proper assessment with a dentist is the best way to find out which is more suitable for you.

Digital VS Traditional Impressions

In the 21st century with so many new advancements in dental technology, we can truly say that digitally taken impressions have made the biggest difference for many dentists and dental practices. This gives patients a more relaxed and less time consuming treatment at the dentist.

The traditional approach

For many patients having dental impressions done can be very unpleasant. Patients with a strong gag reflex struggle with the entire procedure. There’s nothing worse than those three to six painful minutes waiting for the “alginate rubber material” (gooey substances) to set. For many decades traditional impressions were needed for crowns, bridges, veneers, bleaching trays, and not forgetting night guards.traditional impression

Digital impressions using an IOS scanner

Digital impressions are taken with an intraoral scanner (IOS) using optical light technology as its source to scan the soft and hard tissue within the mouth.  The IOS scanner digitally captures clear and highly accurate impressions within seconds. With a digital scanner, patients will not feel uncomfortable and have a gagging reflex or throw up when impressions are being taken.

Benefits of digital impressions

  • Digital impressions avoid the discomfort these traditional impression materials can cause patients, such has gagging or even throwing up.
  • No more awful taste left in your mouth after having impressions taken.
  • Patients save time in chair with their dentist as they do not need to wait for the alginate substance to take form or set.
  • While scanning we can immediately find errors or missed areas.
  • Digital impressions can be stored electronically which contributes to our recordkeeping and the POPI act.
  • Much more accurate than conventional impressions
  • Easy to send to dentists (Specialists around the world)
  • Forms part of a fully digitally integrated dental clinic such as Silver Oaks Dental
  • Integrates fully and immediately into the DSD protocol.

The Cost of Clear Aligners in South Africa

The cost of Clear Aligners is surprisingly affordable in South Africa. There are many adults who are just not keen on wearing traditional wired braces. Clear aligners are a great alternative as it is a clear and comfortable option for realigning your teeth.

Here are a few benefits:

  • Aligners are practically invisible.
  • Smooth surfaces (no painful metal brackets and wires)
  • Can be removed before eating and brushing teeth.
  • No long or painful dental appointments.
  • Fast and efficient (usage varies between 2 months to 9 months)
  • Before and after teeth movements are digitally simulated. This will allow the orthodontist to show you the transitions from the current state of your teeth to the expected outcome results.
  • The perfect option to “realign” your teeth again if they have gone crooked years after having traditional braces.

clear aligners

Factors that contribute to the price you pay for aligners:

  • The complexity of your case.
  • A Single jaw treatment or both jaws.
  • A refinement stage if you do not wear your aligners correctly.

How much will these clear aligners cost?

The cost of aligners are determined by the complexity of your case. The average cost for clear aligners starts from around R20 000 per jaw and around R45 000 for both jaws. Complex cases are more costly as they may require a refinement phase. Only an orthodontic assessment can determine the cost estimate as well as if you will be eligible for clear aligners.

How To Fix The Gaps Between Your Teeth

We get asked this question often at Silver Oaks Dental Clinic ‘How to fix the gaps between my teeth’.

If the gaps between your teeth are making you feel self-conscious then you might want to try and find ways to fix them. Some procedures are cost effective and less time consuming. We discuss them in this article.

Before we get into the details it is important to understand what causes the gaps between your teeth.

gaps between teeth

Gapped teeth which are also called Diastemas are one of the most common dental issues and can result from several issues.

Disproportionality sized teeth – gaps occur when your teeth are smaller than the size of your jawbone.
Oversized tissue between your front teeth called the Labial Frenum prevents your gap from closing. The tissue gets in between your front teeth and prevents your teeth from fusing together.
Thumb sucking – the sucking motion can force your teeth forward creating a gap.
Gum disease – Gapped teeth can also be caused by gum disease. The infection can cause gums and soft tissues supporting your teeth to become damaged.

How do i fix the gaps between my teeth Doctor?

You will need a thorough analysis by your dentist. He/she will need to take an x-ray and analyse your teeth. Your dentist will then come up with the best solution according to your individual needs.

The three options that are available in order to fix the gap between your teeth are, orthodontic braces, dental veneers and dental implants.

Orthodontic braces might be an option depending on the size of the gap. Many people do not like the look of metal braces and the fact that you must wear them for 2-3 years.

There are two other options that you can discuss with your dentist that is a great alternative to metal braces.

Dental veneers are usually the best option. It is a quick procedure usually 2-3 appointments.
Dental veneers are thin, tooth coloured shells that are attached to the front surface of the teeth to improve the appearance. Porcelain veneers are usually the best quality as they look and feel just like your natural teeth.

If you have exceptionally large gaps, then dental implants could be another option. Chat to your dentist and he will be able to offer the best advice.

How To Fix The Gaps Between Your Teeth 2fixing the gaps between your teeth 3A recent patient (above) at Silver Oaks Dental wanted to fix the gaps between her teeth. Her main complaint was that she had gaps, chips and some worn down teeth. They were also stained and discolored.

Patient’s front teeth had a gap in between and made her very shy to smile

She came to us with the hope that Dr Huson could help her regain that confidence she had almost lost growing up.

Veneers came to be the best option to fix Keisha’s smile. Not only did veneers close her gaps but it also straightened and whitened her teeth in few easy steps! Porcelain veneers are resistant to staining and mainly used by Dr Huson because of its high durability.

After a hygienist’s cleaning, we made bleaching trays for her upper and lower jaw to whiten it to her desired shade. She wore this for 14 days at home and came in for an hour laser to enhance and brighten her teeth before we started with the designing.

We used the latest in digital technology to design her teeth called Digital Smile Design

Dr Roy -Richard Huson examined her mouth and face and to determine the right fit size and shape of her veneers. We used Digital Smile Designing (DSD) technology and photographs to design the perfect smile for her. Computer imaging and photographic technology will allowed her to visualise her smile before it is even finished!

We made four upper veneers which closed the gaps instantly. She came in to try on her veneers first so that her friends and family could approve and for her to feel and experience the look before we do the finals.

Once she was happy with it, she came in to cement the finals. Her smile is straight without any gaps, brighter and all the chips and cracks restored.

It did not take Kershia long to get used to her new smile because she instantly loved it! She is incredibly happy with the outcome of her veneers. She feels more confident with her fuller teeth and her friends and family love her new look.

We are very thankful we had the opportunity to make a difference in Kershia’s life.

is it time to straighten your teeth

 Functional straightening of your teeth

Your teeth can be straightened to improve the functionality of your smile.

  1. Sometimes teeth straightening is done before major cosmetic dental work.
  2. Straighter teeth are cleaner teeth. Straightening your teeth can help prevent decay. Crooked teeth can make it harder for you to clean thereby having a troubling build-up of plaque and decay. In addition it will give you chronic bad breath or gum disease.
  3. Crooked teeth affect jaw alignment – Sleep Apnea and allergies is another reason to straighten your teeth. Improving the shape of your mouth and jaw can help improve these conditions.

The following are teeth straightening options:

The first two which is the clear aligner and dental veneers allow you to straighten your teeth without braces.

Clear aligner – This option can straighten your teeth within 11-16 weeks. Your dentist will need to analyse your teeth and depending on your individual case recommend the number of weeks that you need to keep it on for.

There are three methods in order to straighten your teeth without braces

The first method is Dental veneers

This is the quickest method as it can take less than 3 weeks to get done. So if you have less time on your hands and would like to straighten your teeth quickly then veneers is the way to go.

The second method is clear braces (Inman Aligner or Invisalign)

This might take around 9 to 12 weeks or more for normal procedures and visits every 2 weeks to the dentist to tighten the mouth guard.

This is also a quicker solution to straighten your teeth rather than traditional braces. Although the disadvantage is that it takes longer than dental veneers to get your teeth straightened. It is also more time consuming with additional visits to the dentist.

When the dentist analyses your teeth he needs to see if this procedure can be done on your teeth. This procedure can only straighten your teeth and not correct a strong overbite.

The third method is traditional braces

This method is the most costly method and you will most probably need to wear braces for over 2 years in order to get your teeth straightened. The look with metal braces in your mouth is also NOT aesthetically pleasing. You will need traditional braces if you have a strong overbite. You will need a dentist to analyse your teeth and give you the best recommendation.

The fastest and most cost effective method  to straighten your teeth without braces is Dental Veneers.

However, you still need to chat to your dentist and see if this solution will work for you.

Below is a method of both dental veneers and the clear aligner that was used on a recent patient @silveroaksdentalclinic.

When Sinothando came to us she wanted a quick solution to her long term problem . She wanted to reduce the gaps between her teeth and get them straightened without any long procedures such as braces.

She also had peg laterals. In dentistry this refers to an anomaly affecting her lateral teeth (Upper second Incisors) causing her teeth to look abnormally small and cone shaped compared to being rectangular in shape.

The solution for sinothando was simple orthodontics to pull the two front teeth together thereby straightening them without braces.

Veneers were made to reshape the lateral teeth, again it was a solution to straighten teeth without braces.

She also had minimal surgery called a Frenectomy to relax the muscle in her upper lip which causes the formation of the huge gap in the middle of her teeth.

The biggest advantage of Sinothando’s procedure is that she didn’t lose any tooth structure. Sinothando loves her new teeth and loves to take photographs of herself showing of her new look. Her family say it has made her look more sophisticated and neat. We are very happy that we have helped her regain her confidence.

Inman Aligner

The Inman Aligner is a perfect solution for overcrowding and crooked teeth. It is cheaper than the invisalign but straightens teeth in exactly the same manner. The Inman Aligner is another brand name for clear aligner therapy. It is a safe and cost efficient solution to straighten teeth in a short space of time. You only need to wear the Inman Aligner for 10 – 18 weeks in normal cases.

Your front teeth will be gently guided to an ideal position in a matter of weeks.

Another huge advantage of the Inman Aligner is that it is removable. So if you have an event to attend you can remove it. You can also wear it all day and nobody will notice that you have something in your mouth as it is clear.

The Inman Aligner has Nickel Titanium coil springs that power two aligner bows that gently oppose each other, guiding the teeth into their new position. These gentle forces are active over a very large range of movement, which is why the Inman Aligner works so quickly

Teeth Straightening

How long is the treatment with the Inman Aligner?

The lab will then give you a before and after scenario using prediction techniques on a computer. We will then show you the photos of what your potential treatment might look like with a quote. Once approved we can begin your treatment and set appointments up with Dr Richard Huson.

What’s involved in Treatment with the Inman Aligner?

• Impressions are needed so that the lab can fabricate your custom made Inman Aligner
• Initial fitting of the Aligner
• Wear the Aligner 16-20 hours a day
• Regular Inman checks every 2-3 weeks
